Technology kicked my morning in the 'nads

I love technology. I love what opportunities we have from technological advances. I love my iPhone, my iPod, the possibility of going into orbit someday, avoiding surgery when I broke my shoulder, being able to talk to my son when he was in Costa Rica, watching the Dodgers online, and a whole bunch more. And I really love my new MacBook Pro. I love having a laptop again, and not just because it means I have a laptop (woo, look at me, I have a laptop and I'm still not cool) but because it's a great tool for a writer/advocate/bicycler such as me.

But it's a new laptop, and it's a long way from set-up, which means that this morning, instead of my usual time writing for this blog, I was poking around updating software, copying files, finding registration numbers. Doing everything but working. It is going to take a while to get all that sorted out, but on the flip side, when I go to the Senate District 22 nominating convention tonight, I will be able to get started on my draft while I am there. I can get notes into place as the meeting progresses and not have to wait until I get home, exhausted and ready for bed.

So this morning, got nothing done. That's the danger with technology, the flipside to all the good things our modern toys can do: We can undo everything. Tech gives us the stars and opportunities to expand our humanity; it enables us to enslave, oppress and kill one another with great efficiency. I love technology, but I'm always aware that it's not the tool that matters. It's the pretty shiny case the tool comes in!
